The Members

The Bluestockings were more than a small group of literate or eccentric women - the group included both genders and all social classes in its meetings and mission. These individuals worked together to advocate for educational accomplishments and an advanced sociability that existed outside the realm of prescribed patriarchal society. Most members were reasonably wealthy and well-educated, but they idealistically believed that these characteristics were not necessary for membership in the circle.

In addition to these major contributors, there were many supporters that advanced the Bluestocking mission and way of life who are included in the circle.

There are a variety of other interesting dynamics regarding the lifestyles and influence of the Bluestocking members. The amount of information available on these women is minimal - it's crucial for contemporary scholars to take this available information and analyze it within an academic context.
